Ever since this Clermont institution opened back in 1999, Le Sisisi has changed and morphed to suit Gilbert’s mood. He’s the music-loving boss (he also owns the record store Spliff) who’s a fan of hearty haute cuisine. Not only does he have a nose for good things, he also had a stroke of luck when a Michelin-starred chef on the brink of retirement helped launch the business and train the team who are still working there to this very day. Le Sisisi soon established its reputation as a friendly and festive bar-restaurant, with a mix of genres from back in the day that are lesser well-known today.
The recipe for its undeniable success is simple. First off, take the décor, which is rather unusual and classy. There’s a grand piano, a small patio, wooden tables, grey-coloured walls adorned with vintage paintings, and a ginormous plant dominating the space. It all makes for a rather alluring look that’s a little loopy and which would be nothing if the menu wasn’t up to the same standards. Said menu is an invigorative feast: foie gras medaillon with a Jura vin jaune to kick things off; followed by sautéed veal kidneys with chanterelle mushrooms or cod with chorizo; and a creamy white chocolate pot with a raspberry centre to finish.
There’s an extensive wine list that’ll sure make you smile. Lucky for us because, while Le Sisisi is open for lunch (Tuesday to Friday) and dinner (Tuesday to Saturday, from 8pm), don’t forget it’s also a bar! You’ll find Gilbert behind the counter, who’s always more than happy to tell you all about this venue’s wonderful history, its wine collection and Clermont-Ferrand in general. Not only that, he’s DJ-ing away picking some wonderful tunes, making for the icing on this rather jam-packed cake. And the music sure is mighty fine, from Charlotte Gainsbourg to Patti Smith – who have both been known to frequent the place, in person and on record!
